Reading Headstart | Read phonetically

At what age can you start teaching a child to read?
When they’re babies? At 2 years old, 3, 4, or 5 years old, or wait until they’re in school?

According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress,

If you delay your child’s reading skill development until he enters school, you are putting your child at risk…

Did you know that 67% of all Grade 4 students cannot read at a proficient level!

Of that 67%, 33% are only reading at the BASIC level.

Additionally, the remaining 34% CANNOT even achieve reading abilities of the lowest basic level!

Great news!

There is a super simple and extremely effective system that will even teach 2 and 3 year old children to read.

This is a unique reading program developed by a loving parent.

Furthermore, she is an English teacher of 14 years, who successfully taught all of her children to read.

Before she invented this miraculous program, her oldest boy was falling in English.

That is when this breakthrough system came to fruition.

After that, she even taught her baby girl. In fact, she was reading before turning 3 years old.

The reading system she developed is so effective that by the time her daughter was just 4 years old, she was already reading at a grade 3 level.

She has a video to prove it…

Babies CAN read

Her reading system is called READING HEADSTART, and it is nothing like the infomercials you see on TV, showing babies appearing to comprehend, but who have only learned to memorize a few word shapes.

This is a program that will teach your child to effectively decode and read phonetically.

It will allow you to teach your child to read and help your child develop reading skills years ahead of similar aged children.

This is not a quick fix solution where you put your child in front of the TV or computer for hours and hope that your child learns to “read”… somehow…

This is a reading program that requires you, the parent, to be involved. But the results are absolutely amazing.

Thousands of parents have used Reading HeadStart to successfully teach their children to read.

All it takes is 10 to 15 minutes a day.

Judgemental people

Story by Carole St-Laurent

Judgemental People

We are all judgemental at some point…

That is to say, haven’t you ever misjudged someone maybe because of their skin color, social status, handicap or even size?

Society is often judgemental, placing labels on others and marginalizing them unfairly.

Even if someone “is” a certain way, it does not mean he cannot change for the better.

In fact, who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

Plenty of elderlies go back to school for the simple pleasure of learning or to finish what life didn’t allow them to accomplish.

Anyone can fundamentally learn something new or change if they have a deep desire for it or a strong will.

Besides, even the most stubborn of all cats can learn to do tricks in exchange for some treats.

We need to teach our children that it is never too late to do or learn something and that no matter their circumstances, physical abilities or skin color, they can be and do whatever their heart’s desire. judgemental people #childrensbooks #kidlit #booksforchildren

Old ways of thinking

People often wrongly judge, or tag others simply based on what they see.

The saying “Never judge a book by its cover” is so very true when it comes to people.

For example, many folks frequently underestimate the potential of others and will unjustly label them with a condescending adjective.

Thus, an obese person is labeled as lazy. A homeless is labeled as ignorant. Handicapped people are labeled as dimwitted.

Stereotyping is an old way of thinking, passed on from one generation to the next.

We need to teach our children that it is never too late to do or learn something new.

In other words, no matter their circumstances, physical abilities or skin color, they can be and do whatever their heart’s desire.

For instance, it is not because you come from a family of hunters that you cannot become a vegetarian.

Someone that looks like an old scary grumpy man, may turn out to simply be a lonely elderly man in need of some company or an attentive ear.

We are so often very judgemental simply based on appearances.

Yet, if we took the time to get to know the individuals just a little bit, we would discover a myriad of fantastic and interesting qualities about them that we would have otherwise never doubted of.

The misunderstood Piranha

In the case of the children’s storythe piranha and the goldfish” Marla the goldfish faces up to Oscar the piranha and teaches him that he doesn’t have to be a mean bully.

Likewise, she makes him see that she is not afraid of him or his reputation.

Consequently, she sees his underlying qualities that even HE had long forgotten and buried deep inside of himself.

The piranha and the goldfish is an ideal book for parents who want their kids to learn about acceptance, making friends and the importance of not being judgemental, because things are not always as they seem.

Additionally, they will discover that there is good in everyone.

It’s a very colorful picture book with big lettering, making it very enjoyable and easy to read for children and grandparents alike.

It makes for a wonderful gift to read aloud together at any time.

Our wandering mind

To get back to the point, we all need from time to time to monitor our thoughts.

As such, we need to think about what we’re thinking about.

For instance, we often go along thinking things about other people, judging them, and we don’t even realize it.

However, we need to look for the positive instead of the negative.

Namely, passing judgments is a negative habit, and it is essential that we avoid stereotyping.

Conversely, we also need to stop judging ourselves.

Finally, we must focus on our own lives and remember how it feels like to have judgment passed upon us.

People often wrongly judge, or tag others simply based on what they see. judgemental people #childrensbooks #kidlit #booksforchildren

Parallel world dreams

By Carole St-Laurent

Parallel world through our dreams

Lately, I’ve been having really weird, disturbing dreams that feel so real that when I wake up, I am totally confused as to where I am.

As a result of this, I feel as though I’ve spent my whole night living in a parallel world. That is to say, some elements from each world, the dream world and the reality world, have a few of the same elements going on.

For this reason, I started thinking…

What if our dreams ARE the actual reality and when we wake up, THAT is when we are in the dream state. Food for thought.

Parallel world dreams

What does it all mean?

While sometimes you can tell that your dreams have been influenced by something you’ve talked about, or something you saw the previous day. But other times it seems like the dream just came out of nowhere, but yet it felt so real.

When that happens, I question myself as to what the heck provoked such intense dreams.

Even though they are not exactly nightmares, they are not pleasant dreams either.

All the same, when I wake up, I feel exhausted from living such a disturbing adventure.

Be that as it may, they say that dreams can sometimes foretell future events, warn us or inform us of something wonderful coming.

Additionally, sometimes it is also a mirror to our deepest inner thoughts.

But consequently, when dreams have no apparent logic or connection, or simply seem to make no sense, what is THAT supposed to mean???

That indeed our life has no sense?

I seriously don’t know, but I sure wish I did.

When did you start writing?

Fans often ask me  . . . “When did you start writing?”

By Tesa Jones

Theanswer . . . I was 10-years-old.  For Christmas that year, mygrandmother gave me a diary with a lock and key.  When I opened thegift, she whispered in my ear, “Write what you feel.”   To my surprise, words poured out of me and landed on the pages of that little red book.

At 15, I wrote the first story I was willing to share with my peers. The positive feedback from my teenage friends and my teachers was justenough encouragement for me to continue on my literary journey.  Yearspassed.  During my twenties, college and career got in the way of mydreams.  When I hit 30, I was an at-home mother of a toddler.  With allof my attention directed to my child and my husband, I felt a loss ofidentity and my self-confidence was waning; as a result, I decided tocarve out some personal time for writing.  With a detailed outline andmy beloved characters constantly dancing inside of my head, I wrote thefirst draft of Cobwebs of Time.

There were very few home computers in those days; therefore, thefirst draft was written on an IBM Selectric typewriter.  At that time, aream of bond paper was $24.99 — half of my weekly grocery allowance. To save money, I typed on both sides of the paper.

When I wrote the last word of that first manuscript, I felt a surgeof pride for my accomplishment. However, it was short lived.   I waspregnant with my second child and I knew my priority was — to be amother first — plus — I had a home in need of my undivided attention. Consequently, I boxed  up my manuscript and put it on the top shelf ofmy closet.

I do not regret one minute of those precious years I spent focusingon my family and our hectic, crazy schedules:  the t-ball games, thebedtime stories, the Girl Scout Cookie sales, the soccer practices, theschool plays, the homework, the softball games, the hours dedicated to“Hooked on Phonics”, the swim meets, the band concerts, the BLASTtournaments, the track meets, the constant carpool, the mess all overthe house, the ‘what’s for dinner?’ when I hadn’t even thought aboutfood until I heard the question, the award ceremonies, the proms andfinally the graduations!  As I lived those years, I felt as if our liveswere wrapped up in a cyclone and often spinning out of control;however, as I reflect upon those active times, I realize — those mightbe — the best years of my life.  I have no regrets.

When my last child graduated from high school and left “the nest”, Ilooked around my empty home and asked  . . . what now?  The house wasclean and quiet.  My calendar had very few events scheduled on it.  Iwas proud and happy that my children were successfully transitioninginto adults, but — at the same time — I felt a hole in my heart.  Myrole as a mom would never be over; however, my “job” as a mother wascompleted.  I had launched my kids into the world!

I needed to reinvent myself and find a new purpose.  After dustingoff my manuscript, typing it into a computer, polishing the grammar, elongating the plot and adding an epilogue, I pursued my dream of being apublished author.   Although Cobwebs of Time is the second book in The Malone Family Saga, it is the first book thatwas published.  For a year and a half,  my husband and I toured thecountry.  He managed to get me to book signings, countless radio andtelevision interviews and a different motel room in a variety of citiesduring the book tour frenzy.  In an odd and wonderful way, it felt like asecond honeymoon.

The fans enjoyed Cobwebs of Time so much, I was inspired to finish the prequel:  Reflection of Memories. Thispoignant family saga about love, choices, mistakes and forgivenessgrabs the reader by the heart and spotlights what is truly important inlife.  I love to weave the historical events, social issues and culturalchanges of the 1900s into a story that will remain imprinted in thereader’s mind long after the last page is read.  When a personlooks at the timeline of how long it took me to complete my novels, onecan see — I am a detailed oriented writer.  Between occasional “writer’sblock” and a busy life, it took me a decade to finish each book.

However, the result is . . . yes . . . my writer’s dream CAN and DID come true!

Do you like to write?  What’s your story?  How are you pursuing your dream?

Parents-Prevent children’s illiteracy

As parents, I’m pretty sure this directly affects YOU…

It’s a new video that shows you just how bad our children are reading their first few years in school.

As well, you will learn what you can do with your child right now to easily have them reading better than all other children their age.

This even works for children as young as 2, with zero knowledge of the alphabet whatsoever.

Plus, you’ll also see…

  • How to have them excel at reading early even if they currently show zero interest.
  • What NEVER to do if you want your child to succeed in school
  • Why everything you’ve ever learned about reading yourself as a child is now dead wrong, and what your child should be doing instead

You can get it here, now.

Enjoy,

Carole

P.S. In case you skip to the PS (like me),

Here’s the deal.

You can watch this video that helps you have your child reading better than children 2-4 years older than them by clicking here.

New Lives

imigrating for a better life

By Elizabeth A Martina

A little over 125 years ago, a massive influx of people from southern and eastern Europe swept into Ellis Island. Ships dumped thousands of non-English-speaking wide eyed immigrants on these shores and pulled away, crossing the Atlantic for another load.

A high percentage of these people knew someone in the States. Many moved to be with their friends, once they were permitted to come into the country. Italians moved to areas in cities referred to as Little Italy. Polish people moved to areas referred to as Little Poland.  Other ethnicities had their places, too. There was one of each in most medium to large cities.

The first problem the immigrants had was getting a home, the second, a job. The first few years were the hardest for most of them. Those who spoke poor English were forced into degrading jobs that were available before technology wiped them out. For example, rag buyers would purchase worn material at a penny a pound and sold it to paper companies at a nickel a pound. These men could barely eek out a living. Many got jobs in factories, working long hours in poorly constructed fire traps. Remember the shirtwaist factory fire which killed over one hundred.

Poor jobs meant poor salaries and poor salaries equaled poor meals. Many Italian immigrants ate meat only two or three times a week. Nutrition was minima and, as we have learned, that first generation or two was small in size.

Soon after settling and realizing how life was going to be, many of the male immigrants became upset or downright angry. They had left their homes, where moving up, economically, was impossible, to find homes where moving up, economically, was almost impossible. Their customs were ignored or laughed at. Their foods could not easily be found. Their wives felt out of place. Many of these men, after dinner, would go out to saloons to drink away their anger or share it with others.

It did not take long before these men sought to express their anger. Some drank to excess.  Some used violence. We see this in the bombings, threats and mob activities of the early 1900s-1940s, for example, those of the “Black Hand”. Others sought to outsmart the natives and, even, their own countrymen. An example of this was the “sweepstakes” that separated pennies from the poor in the early 1900s, or the “protection rackets” imposed upon immigrants who managed their way into a business.

In my book, “The Ragman Murders”, based on a true story, I asked the question of how such a series of circumstances would impact an immigrant family. As in the real story, Giuseppe Amato and his wife, Carmela, move to Hartford, Ct., where Giuseppe is sure he is going to live the American dream. They live with relatives, who have developed a way of achieving their goals and work the plan. But, Giuseppe, not a patient man, finds another way out of the economic morass. He joins with fellow immigrants and earns money via ways that are shadowy, at best, with devastating results.
